Training of Trainers for ASAF Committee on Mobility Programmes, Diversity and Inclusion: Promoting Diversity and Inclusive Engagement
ASAF, in collaboration with the OCEANS Network, hosted a Training of Trainers (ToT) in Nairobi, Kenya, from 27 to 30 May 2025. The initiative aimed to equip ASAF Committee members with the skills to enhance diversity and inclusion within mobility programmes, reinforcing the broader objectives of Erasmus+ in fostering equitable opportunities.
Objective
The ToT aimed to strengthen the Committee’s ability to promote inclusive engagement and advance diversity within mobility programmes. It focused on developing practical strategies and actionable guidelines that can be applied not only within ASAF but also across partner networks. This initiative aligns with the broader objectives of Erasmus+, promoting equity, inclusion, and diversity in higher education and professional mobility settings.
Target participants
The Training of Trainers (TOT) was designed for 12 committee members elected by ASAF Members, representing diverse genders, regions, and backgrounds. These participants were drawn from various scholarship and mobility programmes, including Erasmus+ (Erasmus Mundus, Erasmus Staff, and Erasmus Credit Mobility), the Intra-Africa Academic Mobility Scheme, the Intra-ACP Mobility Scheme, and the Mwalimu Nyerere African Union Scholarship Scheme.
Programme
The two-day workshop featured insightful discussions, expert-led sessions, and interactive activities.
- Day 1 opened with welcoming remarks from ASAF Vice President, Elizabeth Mang’eni, and ASAF East Africa Regional Coordinator, Dr. Agnes Andollo. Participants deepened their understanding of diversity and inclusion, exploring practical approaches to inclusive practices, and formulating ASAF-specific strategies. These sessions were facilitated by an external expert and ASAF member Mildred Omino from the University of Nairobi. Participants also took part in group presentations and case study discussions led by OCEANS Network President Leila Benabdallah and ASAF Board Member Alexandre Zoumman.
- Day 2 focused on the role of trainers in advancing inclusive education, equipping participants with tools and resources for effective facilitation. The programme concluded with participant reflections and a field visit, providing hands-on experience to reinforce the learning outcomes.
Impact
The training enhanced the ASAF Committee members’s capacity to promote a more inclusive and equitable environment within ASAF programmes and in their professional and personal contexts. It is expected to increase the representation and meaningful participation of underrepresented groups, including women, persons with disabilities, and individuals from diverse linguistic and regional backgrounds—ensuring a more inclusive experience that extends beyond the immediate scope of the ASAF Committee.
