Green Champions: Erasmus+ youth for sustainable communities in Zimbabwe workshop, Harare, Zimbabwe

Twenty-five young people from Harare, Zimbabwe and surrounding communities came together on 12–13 December 2025 for a two-day ‘Green Champions’ workshop focused on sustainability, youth leadership and Erasmus+ opportunities.

The ‘Green Champions: Erasmus+ youth for sustainable communities in Zimbabwe’ workshop was successfully held as a two-day, in-person event on 12–13 December 2025 in Harare, Zimbabwe. The activity brought together 25 young people from diverse backgrounds, including students, community volunteers and young professionals, all with a shared interest in sustainability and community action.

The workshop aimed to strengthen youth leadership in sustainability while increasing awareness of Erasmus+ opportunities and alumni networks in Zimbabwe. Throughout the two days, participants engaged in interactive and participatory sessions addressing local environmental challenges and youth-led solutions. Practical focus areas included waste management, eco-gardening, renewable energy awareness and eco-leadership, ensuring that learning remained grounded in real community contexts.

The European Union Delegation to Zimbabwe was represented by Ms. Laurence Ouvrard, Focal Point for Human Rights and Education within the Governance Team, who delivered the opening remarks. Her participation underscored the European Union’s continued commitment to youth empowerment, environmental sustainability and inclusive development through programs such as Erasmus+.

A key outcome of the workshop was the collaborative design of actionable community mini projects. Working in groups, participants applied the Green Champions toolkits to develop practical ideas they can implement in their own communities. This was complemented by a community clean-up activity, which translated learning into visible local impact and reinforced the importance of collective action.

The workshop concluded with reflection sessions and personal commitments from participants as Green Champions. It also strengthened connections between young people, Erasmus+ alumni, and EU-supported networks, laying a foundation for continued engagement and follow-up activities.

The activity was implemented by ASAF Zimbabwe, coordinated by Custody Chikambure, in collaboration with EMA Zimbabwe, with Reagan Chidhakwa serving as Project Collaborator, and with the support of the EU Delegation to Zimbabwe. The initiative contributes to the growing visibility of Erasmus+ and youth-led sustainability action in Zimbabwe.
