Erasmus+ Opportunities Showcased in Mauritius

The University of Mauritius, in collaboration with ASAF, organised an Erasmus+ Promotional Event on 29 April 2025 with the objective of enhancing student awareness and engagement in international mobility programmes.

On 29 April 2025, the University of Mauritius hosted a dynamic Erasmus+ Promotional Event to highlight the wide range of opportunities available through the Erasmus+ programme, and to encourage students across Mauritius to engage in international mobility and academic exchange.

The event brought together students from various institutions, academic and administrative staff, representatives of the European Union, and members of the African Students and Alumni Forum (ASAF) in Mauritius. It served as a platform for informative presentations, personal testimonials, and interactive discussions centred on the Erasmus+ experience.

The session started with opening remarks by Ms. Rita Parthyneviko, Administrative Manager at the University of Mauritius and Co-Ambassador of ASAF Mauritius, who emphasised the growing significance of international academic exposure for Mauritian students. This was followed by an address from Professor (Dr) M. I. Santally, Pro Vice-Chancellor (Academia) of the University, who reaffirmed the institution's commitment to fostering global partnerships and facilitating student mobility through Erasmus+.

His Excellency Mr. Oskar Benedikt, Ambassador of the European Union Delegation to the Republic of Mauritius, delivered the keynote address, underscoring the EU’s continued support for education and intercultural collaboration in the region.

Mr. Roshan Halkhoree, ASAF Board Member and Director of the Centre for Information Technology & Systems (CITS) at the University, delivered a comprehensive presentation on ASAF’s mission to strengthen alumni engagement and build a pan-African alumni network.

Mrs. Jeanine Yeung, representing the EU Delegation, provided a detailed overview of the Erasmus+ programme’s objectives, structure, and participation pathways. Dr. Michael Ian Rasell, from the Institute of Educational Science at the University of Innsbruck, Austria, offered insights from an academic partner’s perspective on mobility and collaboration.

Ms. Caroline Fitz-Gibbon, Erasmus Mundus Country Representative, outlined available Erasmus Mundus opportunities and application procedures.

The event also featured a compelling testimonial from Ms. Rhea Peshaali Bhurtun, a University of Mauritius student and Erasmus+ alumna, who shared her study abroad experience in Europe, inspiring fellow students through her personal journey.

The event concluded with a Q&A session and closing remarks, leaving participants better informed and inspired to pursue international learning opportunities through Erasmus+.

This initiative reflects the ongoing commitment of the University of Mauritius and ASAF to promoting global citizenship and expanding access to international education.
