Erasmus+ inclusion awareness event in Zambia

The African Students and Alumni Forum (ASAF) Zambia, in collaboration with the European Union, The Embassy of Czech Republic to Zambia and the University of Zambia, hosted an inclusive Erasmus+ awareness event on 12 December 2025. The event took place in Lusaka and aimed to promote mobility, diversity and opportunities for students with disabilities.

Promoting inclusive international education in Zambia

On 12 December 2025, the African Students and Alumni Forum (ASAF) Zambia Chapter, in partnership with the European Union Delegation to Zambia, the Erasmus+ Alumni Network, and the University of Zambia, successfully hosted an Erasmus+ public lecture and awareness event at the New Lecture Theatre, University of Zambia, Lusaka, Zambia.

Held under the theme “Bridging education through Inclusion: Strengthening networks and promoting EU policies – Creating awareness of Erasmus+ opportunities for students with disabilities in higher learning Institutions in Zambia,” the event aimed to increase awareness of Erasmus+ programmes while promoting inclusion, diversity and equal access to international mobility opportunities.

The event brought together students, academic staff, Erasmus+ alumni, youth leaders, civil society organisations and members of the public, creating a vibrant platform for dialogue on global education opportunities and inclusive mobility pathways.

High-level participation and strong partnerships

The programme was honoured by the presence of His Excellency, the Ambassador of the Czech Republic to Zambia, who served as Guest of Honour. In his keynote address, the Ambassador highlighted the importance of international academic cooperation, inclusive education and the role of Erasmus+ in empowering young people to acquire global skills and perspectives.

The event was further strengthened by participation from a delegation of the European Union in Zambia, as well as the Vice Chancellor of the University of Zambia, accompanied by senior staff from the School of Humanities and Social Sciences. Their presence underscored the shared commitment to advancing inclusive international education and strengthening EU–Zambia academic partnerships.

Erasmus+ opportunities, inclusion and alumni voices

Participants were taken through detailed presentations on Erasmus+ mobility opportunities available to students, academic staff and higher learning institutions. Particular emphasis was placed on support mechanisms for learners with fewer opportunities, including students with disabilities.

A panel discussion and storytelling session featuring Erasmus+ and Erasmus Mundus alumni provided practical insights into application processes, life in Europe, academic expectations and the long-term career impact of international exposure. Alumni shared inspiring testimonies on how Erasmus+ shaped their professional journeys and empowered them to contribute meaningfully to their communities.

Strengthening networks for sustainable impact

ASAF Zambia representatives highlighted the role of alumni networks in mentorship, advocacy and community engagement. The discussions reinforced the importance of collaboration between universities, alumni, policymakers and development partners in ensuring that inclusive mobility is not just a policy commitment, but a lived reality for all students.

The event also coincided with the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, making the focus on accessibility and inclusion especially timely and relevant.

Looking ahead

The Erasmus+ Public Lecture and Awareness Event marked a significant step toward expanding access to international education opportunities in Zambia. Through continued collaboration with the European Union, universities and alumni networks, ASAF Zambia remains committed to promoting inclusive, equitable and transformative education for all learners.
